Grosse Face collection by Mauve Naif

Mauve Naif designer Catherine Lebrun is a busy girl. So, I rarely get a chance to see her here at HQ. The first time I had a chance to check out her new "Grosse Face" collection was at the *Smart Design Mart show last month and I was really happy to see her amazing new illustrations silkscreened onto sweaters, tees and scarves for guys and girls.

The tees are super soft and drapy, made from a great cotton/viscose blend. It's the kind of shirt that's so comfy you want to throw it on every day, yet the great fabric and awesome prints make you look like you still put in some effort. It's a win win situation.

Black on black sweatshirt. I'm going to be picking up one of these for myself.

We have these scarves down at HQ right now, in all four colours. Hand screen printed on a heavy weight jersey, these babies go for $70.

Catherine also took part in the En Masse project at the *Smart Design Mart.

For those of you familiar with Catherine's hand painted pieces she will still be making them from time to time, just not at the same frequency as before. They're hand painted one of a kind pieces people, the girl's gotta sleep sometime! So, if you see one, you better grab it while you can!

5 best worst Christmas gift ideas.

The 5 Best and Worst Christmas gift ideas

Hi-ho. Over the years, I've received many gifts that left something to be desired. I'm not going to name names but one time I got a pack of zit creme. As a teenager, I was lucky to not have a crater face, so I have no idea where the logic behind this gift was. Oh, and another time I got a pair of Hypercolor socks. You know, the clothing brand that changed colour from your body heat. So, if you had a shirt, you'd get these weird stain like marks under your armpits. Great idea! Oh, and I forgot to mention, they were snot green Hypercolor socks. So, after wearing them for a while, they were snot green and vomit yellow Hypercolor socks. Great gift. Thanks. Anyway, here are 5 shitty and 5 awesome gift ideas for you. I'll try to keep the gift ideas unisex. Enjoy....

The 5 worst:
#5 Your picture on a mug

Really? You're seriously going to give me a mug with your mug on it? Now, not only do I have to listen to you all day but I can stare at your face while I relax with a cup of coffee/tea/whiskey.

#4 A Jigsaw puzzle

Oh, great. A jigsaw puzzle. Thanks grandpa. So, basically what you're telling me is that I'm so boring, that you thought a jigsaw puzzle would be a thrilling present for me. Thanks. Next time buy me a bottle of sleeping pills because you obviously think my life is shit.

#3 A paper weight

-Oh, my... what is this?
-It's a paper weight... you know.
-Oh... OK.
-I figured you liked, uh... paper and uh, weighing things down..... like my hopes and dreams
-What?!
- I think we should see other people.

#2 A Coupon Book
No way should anyone be giving these. Seriously, even if you're like, 5 years old. If I had a kid and he/she tried to pull off this shit, I'd stab them in the face.

#1 Jewelry made out of cutlery

I knew this guy, lets call him.. oh I don't know, Tyrone. Well Tyrone was out one afternoon in the new city that he had just moved to. He didn't know anyone and he decided to go for a few beers at a nice outdoor patio thingy. Any-hoodles, afterwards, he was a little tipsy and decided to buy his lady friend something nice from one of the outdoor street vendors. God knows why he chose a fork bracelet but later on, a more sober Tyrone, seriously questioned his purchase. He ended up hiding the bracelet for years without mentioning it to his lady, Flange. He found it at the bottom of a box, years later and I.. I mean he still has no idea what made him buy it. Lesson learned.

The Best:

#5 Classic childrens books
Whether it's for nostalgic reasons, the amazing artwork or just trying to introduce someone to a classic story, you can't go wrong with titles like "Where the Wild Things Are", "The Hockey Sweater", "In The Night Kitchen" or "There's A Nightmare In My Closet". And if you can find a now out of print copy of "Nicobobinus" by Terry Jones of Monty Python fame, then consider whoever you're getting it for to be one luck SOB.

#4 Log Pillows
Yeah, I know, my lady friend makes these. So what?! They're awesome. Perfect for taking on the plane or road trip.

#3 Jeffrey Brown books
I always recommend books by Jeffrey Brown. Everyone can relate to these short little anecdotes about puppy love, harmless crushes and being dumped.

#2 Artwork
It's Probably Worth More Than That!" our 4th annual group exhibit showcasing artwork for $100 and under is still running. New works by Aya Kakeda, Daniel Lim, Rupert Bottenberg, Michelle Sayer, Benjamin Deshaies and many more. It's better than giving someone a bottle of Dep wine, am I right folks?

#1 HQ Gift Certificate
Well, I guess you'll be telling the person "I really don't know you that well but at least you can get something you'll like". So what? What else are you going to do? Give them an envelope with money in it? What are you, their Grandma?

Hope that helped. It's a weird coincidence that all the best ideas are from HQ. Strange.

I love you,

tyson

Worn issue #9

Yes, we've finally got our grubby hands on Worn issue #9. For those of you who didn't come out to the Slow Dance launch party, feel free to swing by HQ to secure a copy for yourself. And I really recommend going to the next Slow Dance Party (this New Years Eve... and it's free!) It feels like being in High School again... without the weird puberty and uncontrollable boners... ahem.

Moving on....

We've been adding many new designers to the HQ Family lately. Sebastien Kauffmann is one of the newest with his felt laptop covers. Never lose sleep over a scratched laptop again. Play hours of World Of Warcraft at your local Starbucks in style....... NERD ALERT!! Busted.

But seriously, these are dope.

It's Probably Worth More Than That 4!

The show is finally hung! As usual, the amount of amazing work that has come in astounds me. So, keep your evening free tomorrow and head down to HQ for the opening party. And as we do every year, any art sold can be taken home that night to be wrapped up and put under the tree for your lucky friends or family.

And don't worry if you cannot make it to the opening night. The exhibit will run for the enire months of December and January. And due to the massive amount of work brought in, the exhibit will always have something new each day.

See you soon!

News!

Wow, wow, wow, we've been busy for the last few weeks. The blogging has taken a backseat for
a while, so I apologize. What have we been doing? Well after getting back from an awesome trip to London, we've been going full steam ahead with the usual Fall/ Christmas shows etc. AND we moved Angie's (Norwegian Wood) studio from our house to a much larger studio space... phew!

For those of you who missed Expozine this year, you really screwed the pooch! It was jammed packed with amazing small press books/zines and incredible prints from some awesome artists. We had a booth next to talented artists Marc Bell and Amy Lockhart, who BTW, are pretty nice people. And I was very close to my weakness Drawn & Quarterly, where I always unload some cash.

HQ will also have a booth at the upcoming Montreal Comic Con this December. So, if you are nerding it out at Place Bonaventure this December 6th, be sure to come by and say hi!

Also, don't forget that HQ will be hosting our 4th annual "It's Probably Worth More Than That!" exhibit Friday, December 4th. Always a favorite show, it will showcase many local and international artists work priced at $100 and under. There going to be a grip of amazing work so you better get here early if you want to snatch up work from your favorite artists!

And last of all (for now) we've teamed up with Elaine Ho, Furni, Broundoor and Supayana to bring you *Smart Design Mart. This is the first time we've organized a design show and I have to give my respects to all the amazing people who organize similar events like this in Montreal every year (sometimes several times a year). It's pretty tough work.

*smart design mart

a curated showcase of unique offerings from young talented designers

A new kind of design show has emerged on the Montreal scene. Taking the idea of the classic artisan fair and giving it a modern spin, the curators of this event (Furni, Broundoor, Elaine Ho, Supayana, Norwegian Wood and HQ galerie + boutique) have envisioned a show with wide open spaces and some of Montreals finest artists and designers. The show is a blend of seasoned show veterans and fresh from the studio first time exhibitors, creating a dynamic mix in a variety of categories (ie. Clothing, jewelry, furniture, art and the welcome addition of select vintage goods).

Set in the industrial setting of a 15 000 sq/ft garment industry loft (now empty) each designer has been hand picked by the Smart Design Mart curators and has been asked to create a mini boutique within the space. Aisles will be roomy, food and drink will be served and music will be drifting, creating the perfect exciting yet comfortable shopping event. Montreals own En Masse art collective has been invited to create a live art installation in the lounge area (center hall), giving shoppers a moment to recharge, have a drink and enjoy the art.

On The Road Again opens tonight at HQ

The show is hung and it looks amazing! Here's a little sneak peek at Kate's new charcoal pieces. Obviously, the photos don't do the work justice, so you'll just have to march that cute little butt of yours down here tonight. (Even if your butt isn't cute, we'd still welcome it with open arms.... maybe it's handsome. Or maybe your butt is a late bloomer. I know, BUTT MAKEOVER!! What am I talking about again....)

I love this piece.
See you tonight!

On The Road Again: Animals In The City

New works by Kate Puxley

On The Road Again: Animals In The City opens this Friday!

Headquarters is pleased to present a new solo exhibition by Canadian artist, Kate Puxley. On the Road Again: Animals in the City is a requiem for the natural world, exploring the role of the animal as myth, companion, jester, and trophy. Confrontations with human hubris are provoked through fore-grounding animals in states of vulnerability, passion, sexual copulation and death. Animalistic impulses are juxtaposed and re-aligned with humanity, challenging human notions of 'separateness' from other creatures on earth. The struggle between life and death is used to question and re-invigorate the serene domestic role animals play in urban environments. Through examining the shades between beauty and traditional notions of 'ugliness', the cloying mythical image of 'the wild' and its self-contained trophy forms, are engaged and challenged.

Using masonite cutouts of animal forms - literally framed alongside humans or tokens of the human world – further seeks to highlight this incongruity and play upon notions of animalism.

We hope to see everyone out this weekend. The opening starts at 6pm and closes at 11pm. And as always, the boutique will be open all night as well. All are welcome so bring all your family and friends.

Crywolf Halloween designs

We just got a box full,of new stuff from our favorite Torontonians, Steph and Rose from Crywolf. These ladies have been with HQ right from the beginning. The first time we met them was in this really scuzzy hotel in the middle of nowhere. It was pretty creepy and the girls were great sports for meeting us there but I'm sure they were getting the no feeling once they entered the abandoned hallways and empty lobbies.... but that's another story. I guess it kind of ties into their new Halloween collection. See how I did that? I was born to blog!... Oh god that sounded horrible. If only there were a button on the keyboard that could undo.. or delete things I typed. Oh what an amazing, fantasy world that would be! But this isn't a science fiction movie, this is real life.

What am I talking about?

So, here are a few more pictures from the exhibit. You may notice I've repeated a few pieces... well that's because my earlier photos were pretty rough. Thanks to HQ artist and pal, Frenchie, we now have some better snaps for everyone. And also thanks to Scott Ferry for providing me with the better pictures from last post as well. Enjoy!
